A Jane Austen’s World Celebration

October 28, 2009 by Vic

happy birthday Jane AustenInquiring readers,

Your visits and loyalty will soon drive this blog’s bean counter over the million mark. My, oh, my! When I began blogging about Jane Austen in 2006, I only meant to provide information for my Jane Austen book group. Over three years later I have had the pleasure of meeting Jane lovers from around the world, and getting to know a few of you closely.

To celebrate, I will be giving away a box of Jane Austen sequels or Regency books (some of which I have reviewed, so they are technically considered “used”.) All you need to do is leave a comment on why you visit this blog and what your favorite topics are. I can only send the box of book to someone who lives in the Continental U.S. I will, however, send one book to anywhere in the world, so ALL are eligible to leave a comment.

Let the celebrations begin! And thank you for visiting. Contest ends the moment this blog’s counter hits a million, which I estimate will be two or three weeks. UPDATE: The Comment section is closed for the contest. The winner is Heather Carrol! Thank you ALL for participating and visiting this blog.

I found you when I taught a Jane Austen seminar, and I love the historical overview posts and the Heyer reviews (and I must admit that a box of Heyer novels would make me dance and sing…).

A million! So exciting! I think I found you when I did a Google search of all things Austen. This is a great site for enjoying Austen material, both for entertainment and education. History, podcasts, all sorts of resources! You’ve been quite busy for the past few years.

Thanks for the chance to enter.

I’m happy to know there are so many of us who love the world of Jane Austen! I’ve been following you on Twitter for a long time now, and I congratulate you on the success of your blog! I love to visit here because of the wonderful sense of place and time. I can just get lost here!

Awesome news! I love the Regency era and looking forward to getting my hands on more of them =)
    All Things Austen Forever!
As far as my favorite topics are, it is those things I can readily get my hands on myslef to experience. The BBC series are awesome for those who get to watch them but unfortunately in the states I don’t have that pleasure.
I would love to have a heads up when Austen-themed series are showed in the USA.
I loved learning that Firth was on Leno the other night, I did actually get to watch it!
And of course all things books related.
You have a wonderful blog and always have the best contests.. I can’t believe you have gotten close to 1M hits already! That is spectacular, and shows a job well done.
    Congrats!

Congratulations and thank you very much for this lovely World that is your blog!

Congratulations for your first million! Sure we’ll soon celebrate the second one!
I found you on someone’s else blog, following a link that was to drive me to this wonderful world in which I like to get lost almost every week.
I visit your blog because it’s very hard to be a Jane Austen ‘s lover when you’re living in France, at the complete opposite frontier, near Italy and so far away from England!
The only things I can find around here are some books and DvDs.
To learn ALL the other things about Jane, your blog is my source.
That’s why it’s difficult for me to say what topic I prefer..When you speak about books or films, I note them to buy them with Internet. When I need an explanation, You have the answer; I look at every video you post .You also helped me to find some Jane Austen items..
For all those reasons, your blog became very precious.
You should not have to thank us for visiting, WE should thank you for those delicious moments you offer to us!
    Malyss

Congratulations! I’ve been reading for about a year, and I consider this blog to be one of the best “suggestions” to come out of Google Reader. I particularly enjoy your historical and “daily life in the Regency period” posts. I always leave feeling very informed!

I found you on twitter before I found your blog. I really enjoyed your analysis of hairstyles in the new version of Emma. It was wonderful!

I like your posts on everyday life in the Regency era–the fashions, the hairstyles, etc. I like the time period and it is fun to learn more about here.

  11. on October 28, 2009 at 12:05 Sarah

I found your blog quite recently. I am a history and library science student at a university in the U.S. and as part of an assignment I had to find blogs that interested me and partained to my major.

I have found your blog to be a wonderful source of history and everything Jane Austin. Thank you so much.

I work in an inside office that has gray walls and a gray desk. The work is pleasant and expectable. When younger, I enjoyed Jane’s books for their romance, now I feel a deeper personal relationship with the measured lifestyles she described, the subtlety of manners, the wry humor. These aspects of her spirit are still very alive in my world. Every day, checking into your blog, I get the sense of a fellowship of common souls from both the text and the comments. I have found that even my bland office is a place where I can dream. Thank you for bringing this to my life–and congratulations!

  15. on October 28, 2009 at 13:53 J

I enjoy seeing the book reviews and glimpses into the Regency period. I’ve learned so much about topics I’d never have thought to research, but that are facinating to know more about. And I visit the blog to see what will be next!

  16. on October 28, 2009 at 14:01 Maria L.

I love the look of your blog–it is lovely and soothing to the eye. And the material is a perfect mixture of sense and sensibility, there’s always a nice range of topics. My favorite posts are about Jane’s life and times and I do like your take on PBS/Masterpiece productions.

Congratulations on your million mark and thanks for brightening our day with your blog!

  17. on October 28, 2009 at 14:14 Steph VG

I’ve been a lurker for a while; I read the blog because I firmly believe I should’ve been British, and if I was, Miss Austen and I would have been lovely friends. :)

  18. on October 28, 2009 at 14:19 Milka

    Wow, congrats, a million! :)

    Congrats!

I use this blog as the first stop in everything Austen. I love that you don’t just cover Austen, but anything related to the time period she lived in.

  21. on October 28, 2009 at 15:58 Alfred

I just recently discovered your blog, but I’m very impressed with it. I haven’t read much yet, so I don’t have any favorite topics. Congratulations!

  22. on October 28, 2009 at 17:51 Donna

Congrats on nearly 1 million satisfied readers!

I can’t remember how I got here, but I do know how happy I am to read this blog. There’s always so much great information that helps me in my research and writing.

Although I have to say my favorite thing was learning about “Lost in Austen”. I had never heard of it until I read about it here — then I had to go out and buy it, and now I recommend it to everyone who loves Jane Austen!

    Congrats again.

i love your blog. I love keeping up to date with new releases of books and dvds; I love the discussions and the way it all helps keep JA and her characters alive in my mind. Keep up the good work!

  27. on October 28, 2009 at 20:20 Jessica W.

One million hits? How wonderful! I have read your blog often, and this is the first time I am commenting. Your blog is a treasure trove of information, I simply adore it and have added it to my blog’s favorite links :)

And I simply adore Jane Austen. I love that she was a woman who spoke her mind and used her creativity to write amazing books in an era where anything written by a female author was considered scandalous or unsuitable. I know she did it anonymously mostly, but still, she was courageous!

I have loved all your topics, especially the ones on Regency fashion. I would be delighted to be added to the drawing. Thank you :)

  28. on October 28, 2009 at 20:35 Dayna A.

Congrats! I love your blog, and I love to read it because it gives me my “Austen Fix”. My poor husband tends to get a little over loaded with the wonderful subject, so give him a little break, I read your Austen blog. Thank you for all you do!

  29. on October 28, 2009 at 20:49 ibmiller

Excellent news! I visit Jane Austen’s World because I love learning more about both Austen’s time period and what other people have done throughout the ages to portray both Austen and her times. My favorite topics are definitely the novels and their adaptations, which provide a space to talk about them in a civilize, intelligent, enthusiastic manner. I also love the polls provided – they give a kind of heartbeat of the online Janeite community!

  39. on October 30, 2009 at 02:33 Janeen

Vic, first congratulations! That is exciting news to have such an impact in bloggyland as I like to call it. I think I first came visiting when I was doing a search engine looking up shawls worn in the Regency era and ended up reading posts for over an hour, I was hooked! We all share our love of Austen and regency era topics. My favorite things are when we all read something together, breaking it down chapter by chapter and sharing our thoughts. I learn so much from all the insight and interpretations shared here in the comments. When I see a new book… to me… I come here and most always you’ve already reviewed it. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into the posts especially when there are pictures to help visualize it. And I enjoy the fun that you and Laurel Ann share with eachother blogs. It is a mutual respect and I don’t feel like your site is competing with anyone elses because you have your own style. The layout is easy to follow and I can easily find things in your archives. And last but not least, you have the best giveaways!

I love your posts on fashion and etiquette from the Regency Era… really, the list goes on and on!

Congratulations! I absolutely love your website/blog and I’m not surprised at all by your success! I view the site daily and there are many reasons. I love the information about Regency times, facts about Jane’s life and novels, keeping up with our favorite Austen movie actors/actresses, reviews of new adaptations and most of all the reviews related to Jane Austen and her novels (prequels, sequels, different point of view-icals, etc)

Congratulations and best of luck in continuing all things Jane Austen!

Congratulations on (almost) 1 million visits! I just found your site via google and I think I will be enjoying your posts and information about the Regency era very much. I certainly enjoyed the review of S&S&Sea Monsters! Hilarious. Best wishes and keep sending us all things Austen!

  53. on November 2, 2009 at 17:32 Lady Ashley

That’s awesome! This blog totally deserves it. Such a wealth of information! If I am not careful when I visit, I’ll emerge hours later wondering where the time has gone. My favorite posts are the ones about costume and fashion during the Regency Era. Keep up the good work!!

  54. on November 2, 2009 at 22:28 stilettostorytime

I simply love everything about your blog….but then again I simply love everything Austen so that would make sense. I especially loved reading your commentaries on Masterpiece’s latest editions of Austen…we both seemed to be very similar in our opinions. I also love reading/corresponding with someone who is familiar with the wealth of Austen adaptations out there. I also really like to discuss and read what Austen and her characters would have read such as Radcliffe. I love those types of commentary. The latest I am trying to get is the Castle Rackrent and The Romance of the Forest…no luck so far…have you read it? I may have to invest rather than borrow I suppose. I am also trying to finish reading all the Fanny Burney I can get my hands on.
As I love anything Austen I would be interested in reading just about anything else….although I have read most of what I have been able to get my hands on…as a librarian…that has been quite a lot but I would love more! Cheers and well done on the one millionth mark!!!

  55. on November 3, 2009 at 08:17 Debra

    Congratulations and thank you!!!

  56. on November 3, 2009 at 08:23 Silvia

Thank you very much for this blog, it’s most interesting. I started reading Jane Austen’s books when I was 14 and after 30 years I had to buy new editions because the old books were in pieces!
So every year I read everything again and every time I am thoroughly captivated, these books will never age.

  57. on November 3, 2009 at 11:18 Rhonda Whiting

I like that you cover all sorts of “Austen” topics, like the latest movies and shows, books, houses, costumes, etc! I usually check your site daily! Congrats on the million mark!

  58. on November 3, 2009 at 12:52 M-G Day

Congratulations! I regularly enjoy visiting your excellent site – keep up the good work!

(from an English Jane Austenite) :-)

  59. on November 3, 2009 at 16:18 db

On an extended visit to England last winter/spring we bent our step to the many excellent Jane Austen locations ranging from the Peaks District to Lyme Regis, Bath, Devon, and of course the Hampshire core. As part of the trip planning I setup a Google Alert on Jane Austen, which I can’t seem to bring myself to terminate, even though the books are read, the photos labelled, and entirely different travel planning underway.
Every day, it seems, when I abandon the taint of commerce for a leisurely web walk, the Google Alert list leads me to the doorstep of this very same site. If it is not to forward of me, I would tell you that this website appears to be a significant part of the attractor set for the dynamical system that is the www existence of Jane Austen!
Please excuse my momentary abandonment of Regency reticence.
    Good day (doff)

I visit your blog because I have found no other blog that covers everything in the same manner as yours.
I enjoy reading about the dress of the time period, as well as any other historical references. As a dollmaker and valentine maker (inspired by those of the 18th and 19th centuries) I do love anything of those eras.

  • May we suggest?

  • Hello, my name is Vic and I live in Maryland, USA. I have adored Jane Austen almost all of my life. I am a proud lifetime member of the Jane Austen Society of North America. This blog is a personal blog written and edited by me and my team. We do not accept any form of cash advertising, sponsorship, or paid topic insertions. However, we do accept and keep books and CDs to review.

If you would like to share a new site, or point out an error, please email us. (Yes, we are fallible. We'll own up to our mistakes and will make the corrections with a polite smile on our faces.) Write us at
