The List-Lover’s Guide to Jane Austen is a quick, easy reference guide for all things Jane Austen. When you enter a JA trivia quiz, you can quickly become an expert by looking up the books Jane read, her #1 pet peeve, the people in her social circle, the balls she attended, who broke her heart and the hearts she broke, etc.
Joan Strasbaugh has created the first-ever list-only biography! Written mostly in 140 characters or less, this volume is jam-packed with information presented as lists or charts.
- The flowers in her garden
- Her royal ancestors
- Particulars about her wardrobe
- What she did for fun
- Characters in her book
- Where she traveled
- The items she possessed
- Where she worshipped
- Where she lived and shopped
- Contemporary descriptions of her features
The lists go on and on. (Click here for a view inside the book). The book provides a comprehensive overview of her life. Nieces and nephews born after she died are not listed, and places her friends or family may have traveled (but there’s no evidence she did) are not included. The lists do include friends’ and relatives’ firsthand accounts and reminiscences from neighbors and people who crossed her path.
My impressions of this book are positive. Any time I need to review a fact, I can turn to it and quickly find the information. The cover is attractive but I found the print a bit hard to read. This book will be helpful to Janeites, teachers, students, authors, and anyone interested in the Regency era. I give it 4 out of 5 Regency teacups.
About the Author
Joan Strasbaugh has been a proud Janeite for half of her life. She now works as the senior editor of Abbeville Press in New York, and notably organized the Jane Austen in the 21st Century Humanities Festival at the University of Wisconsin. She is currently spearheading the A former publisher at Jones Books, Strasbaugh also holds a membership to the Jane Austen Society of North America.
The biggest surprise in putting this book together was discovering the sheer number of social contacts, places visited, and characters in her books. Her social circle was enormous and her travels many, mirrored in her novels by the sixty plus characters and forty plus locations in Sense and Sensibility, for starters.

My sister-in-law, her best friend, and our daughters are planning a Jane Austen pilgrimage to England, and this book looks like the perfect source to get everyone up to speed — not all of us are Janeites! I certainly hope we win the contest. :)
Oh, definitely interested in seeing all where she lived and who she knew.
I love everything Jane! I’d love to add this book to my collection! Pick me pick me! The little tidbits that help us to understand more about the woman behind the stories and characters she created is what I crave to know more of!
I’d like to know who the people were that inspired all of her characters; knowing Jane, I imagine they all have their real life doppelgängers.
I’d never heard of the book. What a great idea! I tweeted.
I’m curious about her leisure activities and her circle of friends.
I’d like to know more details concerning what people wore during Regency times, the educational curriculum of a male, how the cant developed and what some of the terms mean.
I am always interested in food history and culture. I would love to know what she liked to eat and her thoughts on food.
As mention in the points above, I am curious who broke her heart as I can’t imagine anyone would do that. I would like to know what her pet peeves is.
I wonder whether this contest is open worldwide or not because it is not mentioned in your post.
I can’t wait to get a copy of this book! It sounds wonderful and just what we’ve been needing. Thank you!!
this sounds like such an interesting book! i’d love to know all about jane, haha:-) especially about the people she knew and things she liked! x
I’m curious to see what’s included in the book about Jane Austen’s letters. Also, things she liked and disliked.
I would like to know more about her mother or where did she get the inspiration for Mrs Bennett
Wow, that book looks so interesting!
I would love to learn more about Jane’s everyday life – from her daily schedule, the books she read, the music she played/heard/danced to and the food she ate, to the people she met, etc. – because I think all these things, trivial as some of them may seem, make her writing with it’s keen and witty observations of normal life so special and entertaining!
P.S. Also wondering whether this is giveaway is open to readers worldwide?
I’d love to know about Jane’s royal ancestors! This book looks like one I’ll be adding to my collection, even if I don’t win it.
I want to know what Jane Austen did for fun, besides going to a country ball! What did she do each day, in addition to reading and writing?? I REALLY hope to win this incredible book!! I’ve loved Jane Austen for ages….
Oh, what a cool book! I love lists :) I’d like to be able to see at a glance what Jane’s favorite fashion trends were, or what she wore… or anything related to Regency clothing!
Jane Austen famously wrote on a table in the dining room and wouldn’t let the squeaky hinge on the door be oiled, because it gave her time to put the manuscript away so people wouldn’t know she was a writer. Woolf mentions it in A Room of One’s Own, implying that this is society working against the woman artist. BUT BUT BUT I moved to England, and found myself living 30 minutes from Jane Austen’s house — I’ve been there several times and in fact I’m taking some people there tomorrow. But there are all *kinds* of extra rooms. Jane could have had her own study if she’d wanted. Why did she write on the little table in the dining room and worry about privacy, when she could have had a Room of Her Own??
I would love to know what flowers she might have had growing in the garden and had available to arrange. Sounds like a great book to have!
As a list maker & Jane Austen student, this book sounds wonderful! I’d love to know what she thought about the fact that she, her mother, and her sister had to wait for her brother Edward to find a place for them to live, when he had 2 grand estates with cottages. Weird.
I would like to know that, too!
I would like to know how she cared for her skin, what her favorite color was, and whether she had any phobias. Would love a book!
(Vic, would I be out of order if I post a link to my blog post about my first visit to Jane Austen’s house? I’ll trust you can just delete it if I’m being tedious. http://mefoley.wordpress.com/2010/05/24/a-visit-to-miss-austen )
I would love to know more about Sidmouth and her romance there. Also, love details about clothes, the food they would have eaten, and their tea (preferences and how they prepared it). Thank you to Sourcebooks for this contest…would love to win a copy.
I’d love to win this book! There are plenty of subjects I would like to have a better knowledge of concerning JA… but something that comes to mind is that I could know a lot more about her family than I do, and that would be a nice thing to learn. :)
I would like to know what Miss Austen’s favorite novel was (both someone else’s work and her own).
I must have this book on my shelf;) I would like to know about her every day routine, how she started her mornings and ended her day. Thank you for offering this giveaway!
What was Jane’s favourite food and did she ever cook? What fruit and vegetables did the Austen’s grow in their garden (if any)? Did they make their own preserves? What did she use for shampoo…and a million other questions I wish I could ask her.
I would like to know what kind of jewelry she had and wore. As a dramaturg for the upcoming world premiere of a new stage adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”, this book would be extraordinarily useful!
I’m curious about fashion. In her letters, she makes reference to buying fabric and white being in style, but I want to know more!
her #1 pet peeve, … who broke her heart and the hearts she broke, etc.
She broke hearts?? I hope she wasn’t as harsh with them as Lizzy was with Darcy at Hunsford. And what is her #1 pet peeve??
Does the book also tell us why her rich brother took so long to help his mother and sisters?
My interest relates to critical dates in Jane’s life, along with day-to-day details of Regency life.
I am always amazed that most people seem to walk every day as an exercise, but it is what they wore on their feet that I would really like to know more about. The shoes they wore then, were most certainly not made for walking long distances I would not imagine. Also health and all female toiletries, things that we know take for granted.
Thank You for this blog I love it
Would love to know more about JA’s love of music, when and why she played the pianoforte, what sorts of music she loved best, etc.
I would love to know what Jane did in her spare time. Did she knit, embroider, read or what ?
I would love to know if she had a favorite author or book, as well as where her favorite place was!
This book looks like such a fun read! :-)
I would love to know how she managed to know so much about the human condition. It’s uncanny, really, her insight and keen eye. Amazing!
This looks like a wonderful book!
I’d like to know more about fabrics used in clothing and how fashion changed during her lifetime..
I’d like to know more about her fashion and housing.
What a great idea for a book! Did she waltz? Play Beethoven sonatas? And even tho she and her sister were close didn’t she and Cassandra ever squabble like real siblings?….love your posts, Vic. Nice to know there are so many oter fans of JA out there!
Another lover or lists! That would be fun to see – especially re: Jane Austen.
I am interested in everything “Jane.” This book will make a great addition to my already growing library.
OOOOOOH! This book is such a great idea! I would be interested in any preferences she may have had. Books, food, people….anything! Thank you for doing this give-away! :D
This book sounds like so much fun. Thank you for the giveaway. I would love to know if there was someone in Jane’s life who inspired the dashing Mr Darcy.
I would love to read this lovely book since I adore Jane Austen. It would also be an exceptionally beautiful present for my upcoming journey to Jane Austen’s Bath. Another reason? My upcoming birthday. Thank you for a chance to win this book.
I forgot to write that I would like to know something about her best friends.
I love lists and of course, JA,
so this book is a happy marriage
of both that I look forward to
reading!
I would like to know what sorts
of gifts that Jane received over
the years and which were her
favorites, as well as the types
that she liked to give to others.
Thank you for the opportunity
to win this gem!
I’d love to have at hand a book of facts about JA to dip into at will, from her pet peeves to the dances she danced!
I am interested in what books she liked to read.
Like Marilyn, I am interested in the books that Jane Austen read.
Her books are famous for mentioning very little if anything of current or world events. Did she take an interest in those events?Did she read the newspaper?
Looks like a fun and informative book! I once read that Emily Bronte studied German while making the household’s bread – she would prop the book open in front of her while kneading the dough. The image has always stuck with me, and I would love to know more about the domestic aspects of Jane Austen’s life. What household tasks might she have helped with? What kind of meals would she have prepared or eaten at home? Did she help with any household cleaning or laundry? Did she work in the garden? And so on :)
Did you say royal ancestors? Can’t wait to read about this!
I love books of lists.
I would love to learn more about Jane’s everyday life and about the books she liked.
I’m interested in her favorite escapes, where she went to get away from our all, as well as more detail on her childhood, pet, etc.
Love to enter if you’re sending to the UK.
Bring on the lists of real life in the Regency Era! The whole “language thing” is so important to me. I love the many twists and turns of the evolving English language and find dialogue in the parlance of the day fascinating!
I have always wondered what the symptoms were of the disease which took Jane’s life so early and whether these symptoms figured in her remaining single. She did accept a marriage proposal and then cancel it the next morning. What thoughts went through her mind to cause this?
I love and value friendship so much. I’m interested to know if she has any female friends, other than her mom and her sisters, what role they had in her life, how much they supported her…
I’d love to see the authors lists on things like: what Jane took with her traveling, maybe bucket list type stuff…I know they didn’t have bucket lists back the but there must have been things she wanted to do/see/experience during her life.
I would like to know what were Jane’s favorite books and authors. I’d also like to know how Jane passed her free time: did she paint, embroider, etc…
I wanted to know several things about Jane Austen. Recently I designed a website for our region and wanted to know what color Austen liked the best for the background. I guessed green but I think it might have been yellow. In P&P, Caroline Bingley looks horrible in that color dress but Lizzie Bennet seems to look good! I need to find out.
WB I
I am interested in her favorite music, the flowers in her garden, what she wore, and what she liked to eat.
It’s easy to see in her novels and letters how important Jane’s family members were to her. Because of this I would like to know more about her brother George Austen. This was the brother who, because of illness, lived apart from the family. What illness was he suffering from? Was he ever brought home at times to be part of his loving family? But most of all, I would like to know more about Jane’s feelings about her missing brother George. Was sending away family members with special needs common at this time? Did the Austen family truely feel living apart from his family was the best course for George, or was he an embarrassment to them? These are questions I’ve always wondered about. Rosalie Adams
Rosalie hi,
Like you I often wondered what had happened to George Austen, the second son born to George and Cassandra Austen. Then, a few months ago I bought quite a few back issues of the magazine, Jane Austen’s Regency World including Issue 52 which had an article on George Austen.
http://www.janeaustengiftshop.co.uk/collections/regency-world-magazine/products/magazine-jane-austens-regency-world-issue-52
It was very informative and, although, not a lot is known, many questions were answered in the article and information from all sorts of sources was brought together. Please let me know if you want to know more about the article.

Angela
Angela, Thanks for the information about where to find more on George Austen. I’ll look into it. I’ve got so many articles and books now on my “Jane Austen must read” bookshelf that one more won’t matter. I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my original comment. Did I understand correctly that those lovely pinbook sets are for sale?If so, I’m interested in set 2. Could you please give me the price in dollars and what postage would be? Thanks for your time. Like a lot of people who have commented here, I am a lover of not only writing lists but of reading other people’s to see if there is anything i have missed off my own and here’s a guilty secret, I always add a few things onto a ‘to do’ list that I have already completed so I can cross them off immediately and get immediate satisfaction…haha!
I would dearly love to know what was in the large number of letters that were destroyed, what her daily routines were and more about how she overcame her sorrow at leaving Steventon. There are so many things I would love to know. Perhaps I should make a list :-)
I have always wondered if she was a sweets-aholic! :) Did she like candies or pies or cakes?
I’d like to know more about her interest in English history, and what influenced her prejudices for and against certain historical figures.
I’d like to know more about her writing process: what time of day, how long she wrote, how long it took her to produce a novel, etc.
I’m a late comer to all things Jane Austen so this book would be a nice treat. I wondering what her # 1 pet peeve could be.
I just started to really get into Jane Austin and would love to have a better understanding of what her life was like 200 years ago. This, I believe, would help me to better understand her books.
Launch event for The List Lover’s Guide to Jane Austen June 6 at the Corner Bookstore in NYC. Details here! http://cornerbookstorenyc.com/event/launch-event-for-joan-strasbaugh-and-her-book-the-list-lovers-guide-to-jane-austen/
I want to learn about her garden. I’m trying to perfect mine in an English style or the closest I can come in an American suburb
What was her pet peeve? How tall was she?
I would like to know more about her day to day activities!
I met Joan Strasbaugh last month at a JASNA-sponsored Austen lecture (Susannah Fullerton, an engaging speaker) and, in talking, she allowed me to flip through her proof of this book for a moment. It whetted my appetite for certain! Not to mention, she was a delightful lady with whom to make acquaintance. I wanted to get into the city last week for her book-signing but was unable to break away from work early enough. So I am looking forward to purchasing it (or winning it if lucky enough) and digging in!
What would I like to know about Jane Austen? I’d like to know where she stashed those manuscripts and letters that have yet to be discovered! Or more in the world of the possible, though not much more – something about the enigmatic romance purported to have started in Sidmouth.
