As part of Winterfest, Hallmark Channel is featuring a made for TV movie, Unleashing Mr. Darcy, Saturday, January 23, at 9:00 PM. It’s a modern interpretation of the Lizzie/Darcy love story starring Cindy Busby and Ryan Paevey. So far, only Clueless has managed a modern reinterpretation of a Jane Austen novel to my satisfaction. Let’s see what you all think of this film.
Here’s a link to Hallmark’s website: Click here. I don’t subscribe to cable, so I won’t be seeing it!
I agree with some of you – from the trailer, this movie does not look promising.
I can’t help myself and I do want to see this movie. Unfortunately I’ll have to wait as I cut the cable cord last year and only have local stations and streaming.
As for Unleashing Mr.Darcy, consider yourself spared.
Thanks. I suspect it will be absolute crap.
I really liked the book by Teri Wilson. I thought it was cute. Mostly because of the dogs.
The movie is by Hallmark so my expectations are low. But I do recommend reading the book!
It looks pretty bad. Of course that’s par for the course at Hallmark Channel
Unleashing is right. An understatement, even if we know it refers to dogs. Hallmark has no business messing with anything remotely associated with Jane Austen. Sacrilege.
All that greeting card money and not a wit of talent or taste. What a contribution to America’s penchant for honoring the mediocre.
Looks like a load of codswallop to me Viv, once they start giving Mr Darcy and Mrs Darcy American accents they’ve lost the plot and me.
This bloke seems to be copying the facial expressions of Dominic West for some reason or other
Thanks for the reminder! I set my DVR and will watch it, sans commercials, once it’s done. I LOVE 90% of Hallmark movies: it’s SO nice to see something that doesn’t involve bloodshed, terrorists, serial killers or A.I. There’s only so many dystopian tv shows that my brain can handle. (I talking to YOU< Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead!) LOL
Meh. But as to other remakes…I kinda liked Bridget Jones. The first one, that is. Agree about Clueless. Brilliant.
Yes, but Bridget Jones had Colin Firth! So, obvi! ;)
Yes, the trailer looked beyond bad- what did one commenter say…sacrilege!
No. I will definitely not be watching this travesty of Jane Austen. UGH!
Well then: I guess, having read all these comments, that I’ll be the only one on this site who’s going to see “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” A group of us Austen lovers are going; can’t wait!
P&P&Z is a robust, swashbuckling parody and in the spirit of a young Jane Austen. Hallmark films are white bread and watered down milk in comparison.
Enjoy the film.
I’m a sucker for any Austen parody, even if the acting isn’t stellar. But I don’t have cable. However, I guess I need to find Clueless!
Absolutely. You can rent it from Netflix and even on YouTube.
Treacle time. Acckk. I should have known.
Back in the day, Hallmark used to air some really great dramas once or twice a year under their “Hallmark Hall of Fame” but they lost their way when the decided to crank out the same formulaic romance every week–20-something pretty white girl falls for handsome stone-faced (and it so happens, rich)guy. Not one character ever has a real job like plummer or farmer (unless he’s an organic farmer selling at the high end farmer’s market), or lives any sort of middle class life that I’m familiar with. –there are romances and happy endings there, too…..this take on P & P is about what you’d expect from Hallmark now–Mr. Darcy judging dog shows? Huh? only on Hallmark…..
Hi, Barbara,
With all due respect, “When?” was the last time you watched one of these Hallmark Romance films? I’ve been Binge Watching them this Winter (it’s my ‘down season’) and delight in them because of their formula. It’s the same thing with any Marvel movie or Star Wars franchises: it’s a welcome formula that can be predicted before your bum even warms the movie theatre seat, BUT…that’s why folks enjoy them!
Here are some recent ones that feature regular people: jobless gal becomes 1st time personal assistant to an injured football player (Love on the Sidelines); penniless rich girl who’s dad lost all their money works on a pumpkin farm she owns that’s in foreclosure (Harvest Moon); pet store employee meets firefighter (The Nine Lives of Christmas); and a nanny is hired by a single dad (October Kiss).
Yeah, they all end “Happily Ever After” but at least Emily Kinney isn’t killed by a stray bullet after a 1.5 year arc of growth (The Walking Dead). I’m just sick to death of these bleak TV series that showcase death, torture, mutilation and NO HOPE WHATSOEVER. At least with these *Popcorn Romances*, you don’t need therapy after watching them. LOL
And I agree 100% with the Hallmark Hall of Fame movies being stellar. I still vividly remember them from early childhood, on to today.
Yep. Pure codswallop.
So I ended up watching this last night, when I realized it was on and there really wasn’t anything else to watch. I missed the beginning….and I have enjoyed some of the Hallmark movies…a couple with Lacey Chabert. This movie was bad…I will say the guy who played Darcy was very handsome and he had a great voice! But the whole thing was just bleh…..it was barely the P & P storyline. Didn’t really take to the actress playing Lizzy. And the whole dog show storyline was stupid.
My favorite Hallmark Hall of Fame movie is from 2010, The Magic of Ordinary Days (I also read the book). and Skeet Ulrich just kills it in the movie.
The Hallmark Channel movies and Hallmark Hall of Fame movies are different. HOF movies are of a better quality and better storylines.
Well, I watched 45 minutes of the “Unleashing Mr. Darcy” and pressed DELETE on the DVR. I liked half of the characters and HATED the other half. But, to be fair, STARZ Channel was broadcasting what they claimed was a “4 Star Romatic Comedy” called “Aloha” with Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone. That one got deleted at the 55 minute mark….ugh! So, it’s not just Hallmark; it’s the content and execution, too.
Bride and Prejudice wasn’t bad…..
I thought I would like anything P&P related, but this idiocy proved me wrong. Darcy wasn’t bad but there was not anything Lizzy-like about the “Lizzie” in this movie. On a positive note I just watched the Sense and Sensibility with Dan Stevens in it. He was so a much better Edward than Hugh Grant in Emma Thompson’s version. I recommend it.
What!?!? Metropolitan doesn’t make the cut for best modernized Austen?
